Putin won't allow his buffer state to fall into the wrong hands, surely? If the local fascist forces fail to slaughter protesters on the streets, he'll send in the Russian army completely independent volunteer militias.

Looks like it.

But then he did lose Ukraine - it might be neutralised, but it isn't his.

I have a couple of friends in Minsk. I confess to being worried about them but heard last night that they’re ok. Having a sh.t time but surviving.

Just wanted to get that off my chest.

As you were.

These people have guts.

Maybe a chance Putin will kill his puppet and replace with a new puppet?

Anyone remember Nicolae Ceausescu's speech in 1989? Where the crowd starts booing and he looks on bemused. 3 days later, his politburo colleages lined him and his wife up against the wall and filmed their execution. It was a bit of a fake revolution - they simply transferred power to themselves - but it didn't hold and free elections eventually followed.

There's been a repeat:

I thought it had echoes of the Philippine People's Power Revolution, where Marcos claimed an unbelievable share of the vote, but it now has echoes of Ceaușescu addressing the crowd in Romania

"Lukashenka is addressing the workers: -- You always supported the President, Yes? "Noooo!" - the crowd replied"

What gets me is his comments along the lines of "yes, I've been cruel, but I had to do it for the country" - I'm sure people will be very understanding...

Also, his "there'll be no re-election, the only way I'm going out of office is if you kill me" comment.

Definitely channelling Ceausescu.
