Having been to Durham in the early 1990s I don't find it hard to believe. There was a sizeable minority of students who took pleasure in flaunting their public school background and family wealth
at the locals. The only thing that differed from Harry Enfield's Loadsamoney character was the accent.

It doesn't surprise me (I went to Cambridge, where I did see some people like this, but not to this extent - primarily because 20 years ago, there was no WhatsApp, Twitter or Facebook).

I applied to Durham. Didn't get the grades.
Clearly dodged a bullet.

It was only the minority. But a very visible minority.
I know my daughter spotted a few in Cambridge. Including a certain Theodore Apollo Johnson at his* college's May Ball last year . Her friends had already spotted him as being a particularly annoying drunk before they realised who he was.
