That's probably because they are trying to express how big the volumes are.
By showing how big they are relative to each other and to some big things whose linear sizes we have some idea of, so it's the linear sizes of the USA and of the British Isles that's giving the scale - not the 'areas' as such.

Today I learned what a Jupiter Trojan is!
I like that they are split into Greek camp Trojans and Trojan camp Trojans, depending on whether they are leading Jupiter in its orbit or trailing it.
Except that there's one Greek in the Trojan camp and one Trojan in the Greek camp (Hektor, the one shown).
