Re: COVID-19 in the United States
So, Don Jr's girlfriend has tested positive, with accompanying claims that's she's been nowhere near anyone important...
Secondly, the fetishisation of personal freedoms continues unabated, with a Kansas newspaper featuring a cartoon likening the governor's mask-wearing order to being forced onto holocaust train transport. FFS.

Re: COVID-19 in the United States
Just to add to the fun in the US - it's currently forecast to be a very active hurricane season. They've just got the earliest ever "F"-named storm - and in July instead of September as it is on average... if they do get some nasty hurricanes then attempting to deal them on top of COVID is going to prove very difficult.

Yes, I was thinking about the additional problems with the usual run of natural disastersFlammableFlower wrote: ↑Fri Jul 10, 2020 11:16 amJust to add to the fun in the US - it's currently forecast to be a very active hurricane season. By my count 100 Florida hospitals are at 90% or above ICU capacity.

Re: COVID-19 in the United States
They could just nuke the citizens instead of the hurricanes, that'll bring the Covid AND Hurricane season death toll right down.

which is....quite a fall and will be interesting to see if anything similar happens here in the UK.In FL, median age of new cases fell from 65 in March to 21 last week
Re: COVID-19 in the United States
Hmmm, seems his own figures don't back him up. It went down to 34 on 26 June (if that counts as "last week"). Still a fall mind, but seems a bit more plausible.badger wrote: ↑Fri Jul 10, 2020 12:59 pmSorry if posted elsewhere but this thread on case increase versus deaths https://mobile.twitter.com/DKThomp/stat ... 5493145605

Re: COVID-19 in the United States
And the states that are typically at risk of hurricanes aren't doing very much to combat the covids, or seem to have stopped trying at least.FlammableFlower wrote: ↑Fri Jul 10, 2020 11:16 amJust to add to the fun in the US - it's currently forecast to be a very active hurricane season. If someone has tested positive for the covids when the bomb drops, does that count as a co-morbidity?headshot wrote: ↑Fri Jul 10, 2020 12:12 pmThey could just nuke the citizens instead of the hurricanes, that'll bring the Covid AND Hurricane season death toll right down.

Nice thread on the links between infection and social behaviour, using restaurant bookings as a proxy for the latter

https://www.wfla.com/news/florida/flori ... passes-20/The total percent positive of all tests – including people who have been tested on multiple days – was 20.72%.
Looks bad. Suggests that they’re testing a lot of people who are symptomatic rather than finding more cases because of mass testing in the population.

All the clamour about how mask-wearing is politicised and grown adults are having hilarious toddler tantrum meltdowns over being required to wear them centres on the US, but in an item about the phenomenon something unexpected pops up:

A chart of the percentage of people in various countries who say they wear a mask. US: 73% UK: 36%

Back over 1000 deaths today (usually one of the lower non-weekend affected days). Just as Trump goes back on air to say how well he's doing.

Re: COVID-19 in the United States
Has someone finally got through to him? I suspect they just related it to polling figures to get him to change tack...President Trump on Tuesday struck a more pessimistic tone than usual about the spread of the coronavirus in the United States, while maintaining that progress is being made toward a vaccine and therapeutics.
“It will probably, unfortunately, get worse before it gets better,” he told reporters at a coronavirus briefing held at the White House. “Something I don’t like saying about things, but that’s the way it is.”
