How Big Is Your Inoculum?

We tend to think of Covid mitigations like masks and social distancing only working or not working in a binary fashion (infected or not infected). At one time there was a lot of discussion on whether they could result in a smaller inoculum and this could result in less severe symptoms. Did we ever get a reliable answer on this cos I can’t find one.
