Am I the only person thinking that if Putin does roll into Ukraine, there might be panic-buying in every European country that would make March 2021 look like a rehearsal?

It seems to me that the consumer society is not robust to external threats from life-forms that don't care about the consequence of their actions, whether those be strands of RNA or syphilitic dictators failing to come to terms with their own mortality.

I'm not quite at the "where can you get iodine tablets?" stage yet, but I am tempted to add a couple of packets of rice and jars of beans to my next delivery order.

When I first read that I was wondering what you were on about, that perhaps the paddy fields of St Petersburg and the baked bean trees of Omsk were a bit more extensive than I thought. But you're presumably thinking of if Nato weighs in, and how much Biden wants war and how far it goes. But I had been wondering anyway whether we should have a dedicated Ukraine thread...

Nope, I'm thinking about day 1. If I were Putin I would fire one (1) tactical nuclear shell, set for a quarter of a kiloton yield, and invite Zelensky to give me a phone call to discuss his surrender terms. To be honest, I'm absolutely f.cking terrified right now.

My sister lives in a fairly stabby bit of central London, and apparently you just can't buy knives round there (at least at her age). My mum had to buy her a kitchen knife in Hampshire and sneak it up.

There's a bunch of US mechanics on Reddit complaining that they can't get standard weight engine oils.

Which doesn't just affect oil changes, but also any maintenance repair that has to be done on engines and cars where the oil needs to be drained to do it.
