Holding my hands together, my middle, ring and little fingers are the same length on each hand. But the thumb and index finger on my left hand are about half an inch longer than the right.

How is this measured, because I think it can be very easy to get wrong.

Indeed. These differences are about 1 mm, so you can't just give someone a ruler from WH Smiths and let them get on with it. You need decent callipers and a precise protocol for exactly what you're measuring and under what conditions.
