Novavax availability in the UK

Post by badger »

As someone not on the list for free Covid vaccines, I was interested to see that Novavax were given the go ahead by the Government in November 2024, meaning I might 'only' pay 45quid for a jab, rather than 95quid.

I phoned around in April this year when there was some low-level advertising by some pharmacies about its availability (Boots announced they would be doing it, and others) but I couldn't find anyone actually selling it across South London (where I live and work). I thought I'd give it a bit of time but the situation remained the same when I occassionally checked back.

Here I sit now (with Covid, unable to see my elderly parents and do various bits and bobs for them), thinking about what happened to Novavax. My Google skills are weak and there is no obvious story that I can find, but no pharmacy is offering it privately that I can find.

I'll be having a chat with my local pharmacy soon, who seem quite clued up usually, but I'm wondering if anyone on here knows what happened?

It's super annoying as 95quid is a big outlay for some of us and, while I see Covid (and Flu) Vaccines as a good thing a useful for health, work and family life (esp. caring for The Olds). Flu vaccine also is not cheap and I do wonder whether the Govt/NHS is missing a trick by not offering these vaccines at a lower cost given the potential significant boost to productivity and care they afford.

The news last year that there would be a 'half-price' vaccine was encouraging but seems to have disappeared into the ether.

What have I missed? Any ideas?

Thanks, I don't know why I struggle to pull this info from the web, but I do. Am usually pretty good at this sort of stuff...

Does anyone think there's any appetite at the DHSC for providing cheaper vaccines (specifically COVID n Flu) among the general population, and some more encouragement to take them? I know it's a money thing but presumably there's cost-benefit of some sort?
