I've come across my first bit of proper corona-woo, with diagrams and everything. (Yes, my online life must be pretty sheltered.) Guy I chat to on another forum (and actaully like, damnit) suggested it came out of lab near Wuhan. I said nah, it probably just jumped species from bats 'cos it's close to known coronaviruses. He comes back with, but it has bits from HIV in it so it could have been engineered.

I track down where this came from (a preprint that has since been retracted) and gave him these links:

@lpm - Why didn't I work that out? Obviously the Chinese wouldn't start an outbreak in China. Well, not unless it was a really clever attempt to put us all off the scent....

Not only for spreading conspiracy theories, they published the name and personal info of a Chinese Doctor they suggested was responsible. You can get away with a lot on Twitter but one thing they come down on very hard is doxxing.

Well it shows why bioweapons tend to not be used against people. One could use such weapons to attack crops or livestock that are economically important to a regional opponent but not your country, but targeting people would tend to backfire.

Unless it's for terrorism from a doomsday cult.

Maybe this epidemic will get countries to work out effective responses to such attacks, which are probably going to become cheaper and easier by the end of the century.

The Chinese are now saying that they think it might have come from outside China.

There is currently no strong evidence that ibuprofen can make coronavirus (COVID-19) worse.

But until we have more information, take paracetamol to treat the symptoms of coronavirus, unless your doctor has told you paracetamol is not suitable for you.

If you are already taking ibuprofen or another non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) on the advice of a doctor, do not stop taking it without checking first.

I knew Piers Corbyn was rather cranky about global warming, but didn't realise how bad he was
