Charcoal filters in face masks

I've been looking on line to buy some more washable face masks with nose wire. Lots of ads for charcoal filters. Is it just a gymmick?

Definitely worth it, if you're off to the Western Front to fight the hun.

As lpm points out - charcoal filters are great for absorbing chemicals.

Also if you wanted to carry out some research into the effects of inhaling fine charcoal particles - using a cheaply constructed mask to hold a load of crushed charcoal in front of your nose and mouth while you breath might be a good way to investigate this.

also handy if you're likely to swallow something poisonous and need a ready supply of activated charcoal to shove down your gullet in an emergency
