I find it strange how often lists end 49 - Alabama, 50 - Mississippi. Surely randomness would give a bit more variation 'cos there's not that much between them. Louisiana and Georgia do sometimes get a look in too though.

I console myself that we're better in the city than outside of it (or at least we would be if The State let us). I am not sure how true this actually is, my view is probably distorted by working at and living near the University/hospital.

I'm not sure what to do. I'm erring on the whole "f.ck it, I did what I could to keep myself and others safe. I stayed at home, wore a mask and was ill for two days after being stuck, you ruin all that by not bothering, so why should I?" But then I go back to the "keeping others safe" bit and I just get depressed.

Case rate is at the same level as this time last year but decreasing slowly, hospitalisations are decreasing too and there are fewer deaths. Which is good, but we had a wave last summer after things were looking OK for a bit and I'm expecting the same to happen this year (but hoping I'm wrong).

As I said before, we're going to f.ck it all up for the rest of you. But we're still not Mississippi.
Well you did your part. Just wait until the modi delta strain hits Alabama. Keep masking, keep distancing and hope you dont need to go to the hospital.

Your insistence on calling it the Modi strain is no different from Trump's insistence on calling it the China virus. Please stop.

If India had a government that cared about its people, all of its people, it wouldn't be in this situation.

Likewise China. And the UK.
And remember that if you botch the exit, the carnival of reaction may be coming to a town near you.

Don't be ridiculous.
a) China still has Covid.
b) There are plenty of countries with left-wing or centrist governments who have handled Covid badly. There are also right-wing governments who have handled it relatively well.

It does appear that populist governments are associated with higher mortality: https://gupea.ub.gu.se/handle/2077/68440

Success (in anything) is far more likely following correct action. Populist governments are happy to act, but reluctant to face reality and act correctly.
