It's one of those things that he cannot possibly do right. If he went to a private hospital he'd be condemned for showing he thinks the NHS is not good enough.

So THE consultant taking care of Johnson is a virologist? Now if I was in Johnson's position - while I might like them to talk to a virologist - I think I'd prefer having my breathing looked after by an intensive care & anaesthetics consultant.

Or do staff shortages mean we now have virologists responsible for intubating patients?

If they had mean talking, and been able to say talking, they would have said talking.

"Engaging" with staff is what you might do when you're receiving some sort of ventilatory support than means you cannot talk (e.g. CPAP or intubation). E.g. squeezing someone's hand in response to something.

Lying continuously on your back is not ideal. “If you can sit and take deep breaths in and out, that will help any respiratory condition – you’re taking in a bigger lungful of air and that will help remove any mucus.” However, she adds that there is no evidence that this will improve your recovery.
