Some Italian students would like to remind Elon what happens to fascists:
https://www.euronews.com/2025/01/22/ita ... -strung-up
Not that I think the communists did particularly well either, and the
Italians didn't have such a problem with Mussolini until he started losing.
Tell that to my uncles and grandfather who were beaten up and tortured by Fascists because they thought Mussolini was a dick. One was eventually shot and left for dead but survived by hiding out in the hills.
What fraction of the population thought he was a dick, what fraction of the population were willing to actively beat people up who thought he was a dick, and what fraction just went along with it until 1943?

Given that Mussolini never had anything approaching a majority for his FIC party in the 1921 election, and there were running street battles between the likes of my uncles and the Fascists until the March on Rome, there was quite a bit of opposition actually. Then he got the levers of state power because the King was also a tremendous dick and a coward, and it was down hill from there.

Things are turning openly fascist very quickly.
His
executive order attacking DEIA (diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility) under the guise of reducing spending is now being enacted.
This official
memorandum has an email template in appendix 1 which was sent out by the heads of most federal agencies to all employees.
It basically shuts down everything related to DEIA. If anyone was hired under the DEIA programs, they are fired. If anyone tries to claim they’re not a DEIA hire when they are, you have to snitch them out. If you don’t snitch, there will be consequences.
It is astonishing how blatant this is.
Edit: He already
fired the female head of the coast guard and replaced her by a less qualified man.

A Republican Congressman has introduced a bill to the House to amend the US Constitution to allow Trump to run for a third term.
It has no chance of success, but does signal widely to the world that the Republican congress is a cult of personality.

The proposal would only allow a third term for a president who has served two non-consecutive terms,
conveniently cynically ruling out the ability of Obama or Clinton to run again.

Things don’t look good for Trump’s handling of bird flu. Bird flu is found in raw milk and Robert Kennedy is a raw milk fan who wants the guy who runs Raw Farm to be an adviser to the FDA.
This Raw Farm (interesting table at the bottom)
https://www.marlerblog.com/case-news/mu ... -raw-milk/
To make absolutely sure we have a pandemic Trump is putting freezes on NIH communication, meetings and travel (I’ve heard suggestions that this is because they are hunting ways to clamp down on DEI and research that benefits minorities but no confirmation).
Also apparently American bald eagles are getting bird flu now which I’m sure isn’t an omen

I heard a lot of people following Biden suddenly and unexpectedly found they were following Trump because they hadn't appreciated they were actually following POTUS.

I may have got it wrong but I don't
think this EO fires all DEI hires, it fires all DEI officers.

Also I don't think it actually fires them. It puts them on paid leave and abolishes their positions. For most of them, they will have civil service protections that guarantee* them a transfer to a different position within the same agency.

He said he'd be a dictator for a day. What does that mean? If it means anything, it ought to mean getting away with exceeding or extending his formal powers.
So we have seen his huge list of executive orders, prepared in advance. Whilst it is extraordinary to issue so many in a day, presidents issue executive order. Is there any evidence that he will actually succeed in exceeding or extending his powers?

He's put real fear into the Danes. JFC, and this is an ally who have allowed US to site as many bases as they want on their land they for decades.
This is turning the US from not merely an unreliable partner, but a pathologically hostile one. Which is frankly terrifying. If the UK isn't looking at a wholesale defence posture review, it bl..dy well should be.

I'm sure Trump will reassure us he has no further territorial demands.
Except Panama. And Canada.

According to Greg Palast voter suppression is what cost Kamala the presidency, millions of mainly black votes rejected or the voters were purged from the rolls. He estimates it cost her 3.5 million votes. This would explain the “swing” to Trump of black voters.

Trump's something of an embodiment of tweedledee and tweedledum with his executive orders that they have to clarify as to what they actually mean.
