Why does Trump want Iran to have nuclear weapons?

I'm increasingly persuaded that there is usually some kind of method to be discerned in Trump's apparent madness. Whilst Trump failed to get a lot of things through in his first term, the change of relations with Iran is something he did get through. A lot of his more "mad" policies that he did get through, they were either quietly revised to something a bit more sensible, or to something of mainly performative effect to say he had done it. But this is something he did just as he said.

Trump's policies towards Iran have encouraged them to move more rapidly to develop their nuclear weapons. This is the quite obvious consequence of his actions. He must surely have known that is exactly what he was doing, for all of the shortcomings he pointed to in the treaty he tore up.

So the question is, why did he want that?

I think you are giving Trump too much credit for self-awareness there.

But there may also be a right wing evangelical faction within Trump's influence sphere that wants a nuclear war between Israel and Iran as the necessary Battle of Armageddon to bring the second coming.

A chunk of the support for military aid to Israel has always been on this basis - to hasten the rapture and end times.

I think there may be no great plan despite appearances. Unless he just wants an excuse for first use of nuclear weapons which he apparently really wants the chance to do.

He’s a sick twunt. Remember at the end of his last term when he went hell for leather on executing as many death row prisoners as possible?

This time I can imagine him nuking Iran in his next lame duck period and leaving the fallout for the Dems to deal with (providing he allows a meaningful election to go ahead in the first place).
